2017
017 was, without question, quite a tumultuous 365 days for a myriad of professional, social, familial and political reasons for not only yours truly but any concerned with the greater well-being of the world (and its future) at-large. From banner success and crippling failure through unsettling uncertainty and unnerving disillusionment…the year had it all.

That having been said (and without delving further into the bottomless cultural rabbit hole), what the year did bring for monk + eero has certainly left me both humbly beaming with pride and sincerely appreciative of every (longtime and newfangled) reader, brand, client, affiliate partner and collaborator that I have had the pleasure of working (or associating) with in due course of crafting inspiring content for you delightful sartorial lot to take in and utilize however you see fit upon your journey to becoming not only more sartorially astute and stately individuals but finer, more considerate gentlemen (and women) of truly notable cultivated style and substance — from definitive features on essential grooming products and investment worthy sartorial heirlooms though specialized event style dossiers, personal photo journals and seasonal shopping guides aplenty.

I only mention this because I believe we are all in this together and that I could not have accomplished what I have steadied myself to without a helping hand in no small part due to the fact that you are all at once my vocational lifeblood as well as the very reason I am where I am today — the continued relevance, growing influence and ultimate success of M+E is forevermore indebted to you.

On that note, arriving come each December 31st is the prevailing perennial notion (or social necessitation) that it is essential we all take stock of both our professional and personal lives, a task that, if truth be told, many of us have grown more confidently accustomed to undertaking and assessing with each passing year of our lives.

Why?
Perhaps it is because we continually gain a better understanding of the reality that time indeed waits for no man (or woman as it were) and as such are acutely aware that constant reflection, lifelong learning, and goal planning are all essential gentlemanly tasks that can better prepare, steady and prime us to be capable of seizing every day and opportunity in the moment (and in style) as they present themselves.

Or perhaps it is simply because we would like to revel in/celebrate all our little victories or otherwise mark such notable milestones in stone so as to better take measure of our growth as individuals by means of strictly adjudging any such yearly progression by the merits of the last 12 months past successes/failures — this can be both quite insightful and alarming.

Whatever it may be, be it prevailing social mores, optimistic belief or personal drive that hastens you to taking stock of life, celebrating its victories and personally reflecting upon your place in this world, its important to remember that January 1st  is simply but another day, albeit one that ushers in what is yet another year, another dawn as they say.

Howbeit, and as we put a finishing touches upon a rollercoaster 2017, I nevertheless took to hastening myself to combing through the M+E archive’s so as to unearth and present before you (just in case you missed any that is) the most popular features/posts on the Journal whilst also tabling for discussion my humble opinion on the year’s finest and worst trends as well as crowning picks for best dressed and most sartorially inspirational fictional gentlemen (alongside a few further sartorial ad libs and selections worth note).

To that end, and in falling in line with my personal goal of continually providing you with the sort of sartorial intelligence and inspirational content that will actively equip you to grow (and dress better) every single day of the year (i.e. not just the resolution pitfall that is January), herewith is the M+E  Sartorial Retrospective of notable menswear hits and misses from the year that was.

 — Cheers! --

hile the New Year is (understandably) beheld by most as an opportunity to turn over a fresh leaf, to recharge, renew, or even perhaps completely overhaul and re-fashion one's life in any manner benefiting thereof as it were, that needn't mean that what has been learned or transpired over the previous year (or years) be simply forgotten, discounted or thrown asunder in the name of starting anew just for the sake of it.

Ou contraire, we must rather always remain willing to “learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow” as one Mr. Albert Einstein once so aptly stated.

One for 2018…

Sartorially speaking, I believe this entails ideally curating a classic wardrobe foundation of smart-casual bridging failsafe wears that have transcended time (and generational tastes) and then styling them them as you see fit with panache and a modern sensibility at the fore whilst likewise always keeping an eye upon the future so as to remain open to the idea of further development, refinement or experimentation so that you are better positioned to tastefully evolving with the times erstwhile never loosing who you are within the shuffle all the same— of being consistent (yet never boring), comfortable (yet never in a rut) and rakish (yet tastefully understated) in your manner of dress above all else.

To wit, it should come at no surprise as to why I prefer regularly espousing upon the endearing virtues of permanent style as well as the enduring merits of cultivating a signature uniform (and wardrobe at-large) whose ageless foundation is flatteringly fashioned from a stately contingent of timeless essentials that are (nearly all) plucked from the evergreen stable of classic menswear staples — those that are not merely universally flattering but that deliver style and substance in resplendent equity.
albert-einstein-quote
As such, and when all the dust has settled, it certainly stands to reason that I am an ardent champion of the belief that your personal style/wardrobe should be as comfortable in its ease-of-wear and ageless in its tastefully stylized form as it is both failsafe and faultless in transitional utility and rakish yet reliable in its creative execution; Or, and to be rather blunt: classically cool, calculating, precise and honest rather then slavishly trendy, carelessly aloof and utterly forgettable (or memorable for the wrong reasons).

To that account, I do hope you have enjoyed this Sartorial Retrospective on the year that was on the monk + eero as well as my personal picks on whom it was I believe were the best dressed/most stylish gentlemen, the timeless styling advice you can always bank upon, and a few choice selections on the best and worst trends to have lined store shelves in 2017.

Beyond that, well it is my promise to you that I will continue to endeavour to the best of my ability to crafting only the finest informative, inspirational, and entertaining content that comes to mind (or that you may well request/propose).
