July: Men's Style of the Month

Summer Transition Wear: This classic men's outfit can take you from morning to night with ease (and just a simple subtraction/reapplication here and there)
Picture
We may soon be getting into the dog days of summer — with its promise of warmth and general mugginess — but there are still those days that the weather is very unbecoming, when the mornings and evenings can still be quite brisk — this outfit can handle those days as well as those that demand a professional (casual) look. Rain or shine, day or night, the subdued colour aesthetic of this getup will keep you looking both professional and summer appropriate, while also adding some extra warmth and coverage for any dreary occasions. It is truly versatile and provides the sort of summer style template that most who just keep it simple and streamlined desire.

As such, my picks this month reflect those very desires — of the ones demanding simple transition wear. All one must simply do is wear it to work (smart-casual/creative workplace, and more laid-back environments) and play it by ear; if it is warmer, take the blazer off and give the short-sleeves a quick roll-up (50's style) with the option of throwing the blazer back on (if need be) later at night for social gatherings; if it rains, you are already well prepared; and if you have a date to go on during the day, this will get you through it too.

And while this look may initially seem quite pedestrian at first glance, upon further inspection one will notice a uniqueness within its character — one that accentuates the classic style formula (dark navy denim, brown jacket, etc.); this singularity lies within the textures and breakdown of each thread, in the distinctive construction of each piece. The pairing of a breathable combination blend of material here (the denim), a quintessential summer essential there (short-sleeved button-down), and finally some seasonally distinguishing items (driving loafers/sunglasses) to round out the aesthetic, all as a cohesive unit give life and versatility to this otherwise tonally subdued look. So, if you happen to be in the same boat as me, with the sun harshly alluding us both on occasion and with the need to look professional yet still (summer) smart-casual appropriate, you will feel all the more comfortable in the warmth and security of this get-up. It can carry you through a wide array of summer weather conditions — from sunshine to rain, gusting winds to morning dampness — while confidently transitioning you from morning to night in ease and comfort.

/BLAZER /
Looks tweed, but is not. Its cotton structure allows for some breathing room and leeway in regards to wearing it in both warm and cooler weather conditions. Push up the sleeves for more ventilation if you're feeling swamped (or take it off altogether). Versatile and lush, the brown pairs well with the dark wash denim and to the overall (brown themed) tonal aesthetic of this outfit.

/ TROUSERS /
Jeans in the summer? Yes indeed! But, the key to wearing denim in the warmer months is to make sure that they have a lightweight structure and consistency (keep it skinny or slim too; no bootcuts or flares ever). Soft and pliable, this pair from menswear powerhouse Calvin Klein should be stylishly rolled up to show a little ankle which — while earning you extra sartorial points — will also allow for proper ventilation of the nether regions. And, because nothing is worse than your ankles swimming in surplus material that bunches up into a pool of frustrating angst and slobbery (if you don't like the roll, then I'd advise taking them to your tailor for a quick hem).

/ SHIRT /
This summer short-sleeved button down in 100% cotton looks and feels like linen and breathes like it too. The texture and detailing on this shirt is exquisite and unique, giving the outfit a dash of material personality whilst also helping keep your scent, and the overall look, fresh and crisp.

/ LOAFERS /
Driving shoes and summer were made for one another. Sleek, refined, and classically timeless, these seasonally appropriate loafers give the outfit a certain elegance — an edge of european refinement — and are the perfect summer accompaniment to what could otherwise be considered a fall outfit (replace the loafers with some brown suede desert boots/chukkas in the fall to carry this look across seasons).

/ WATCH /
This beautiful watch from Danish watch company Skagen, with its rose gold dial and brown leather band, is not only masculine and classic, but is also suitable for both business and casual events.

/ SUNGLASSES /
Whether the sun is shining or not, a quality pair of sunglasses — like these from Ray-Ban — are always an essential. And I've said it once and I'll say it again, there is no better pair of sunnies out there than the Ray-Ban Clubmasters (maybe the Wayfarers?). Some of the greatest minds and influencers in our history have been spotted sporting them, but just make sure they suit your face first.

/ BELT /
Woven (braided) belts go with summer like peanut butter goes with jelly. And this one from River Island can be paired  with nearly anything (denim, chinos and shorts) and is of a quality beyond its wallet-friendly pricing.

THE LOOK…IN ACTION!

So, there you have it! A masculine and sophisticated look all wrapped into one neat transitive package. You only need to choose your clothing and dress once a day, and this is a look you can count on to carry you through your days —and nights — of work and play.

THE SOUNDTRACK

This (hidden?) summer gem by Mr. Miller successfully combines an infectious beat, a catchy chorus that will have you hooked and singing along, and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek playful banter in the lyricism in creating a surefire pop hit. It has been on my summer playlist for a few weeks now and, just like the style above, it can take you from the A.M. to the P.M. with ease. Let it put some pep in your step while you get dressed in the morning; listen to it will running daily errands; and hit play again in the evening to accompany the fun you could be having whilst out on the town.

THOUGHTS/OPINIONS?

Would you sport this in the summer? Are you into this more laid-back smart-causal look?
