What is a stylish gent to do?
For many, the changing of the seasonal guards from summer to autumn signals the back-to-work or school mentality and its accompanied scheduled sensibilities; it is a timed tradition and recurring theme come every September — of every given year.
But, while it is inarguably a beautiful and reinvigorating time for all — having a charmingly endearing sense of renewal associated with it —it is one also wrought in undo stress and expeditious ambling about.
As such, I felt personally compelled to dedicate this gentleman's guide to autumn style (standing in for my September Style of The Month feature) to a look that was more casual — too combat the restless realities of the times — in nature; one that has been/will be continually enjoyed before the influxes of seasonal formality (the upcoming holiday/work party calendar) further take over.
And in the process of endeavouring to do just so, I often found my thoughts gravitating towards what was my go-to weekend casual ensemble of choice throughout the preceding month, a look that — while styled here in a homely manner — could also be smartened up with a few studied substitutions (ex. dress shirt + tie).
To that effect, and counteracting my otherwise definitively smart-casual/formal style proclivities — I believe that in dressing up I am/will become a more productive and jovial individual as consequence…there is also a creatively inspirational je ne sais quoi that accompanies the wearing of a properly fitted suit or tailored blazer — is the fact that I am not at a loss when it comes to enjoying the simplistic sartorial solace that strictly informal ensembles like this offer; especially when the aesthetics of the look just so happen to be seasonally practical and refined in heritage.
So without further ado, here is what has been keeping me stylishly comfortable, seasonally appropriate, and casually refined throughout my leisure days/personal time during this month…

SPORT IT WELL: Sockless (because it's still warm enough) and with a casual nonchalance that would play perfectly at either a late fall bonfire or cabin retreat where one can put on display both his musical talents and his studied sartorial refinements. Alternatively, one could also sport it while handling weekend errands, taking the dog for a walk, casually relaxing indoors or outdoors on a crisp autumn day, or on a date to the cinema/late-night casual dining establishment — the options are nearly endless. And as a added bonus, you significant other will also be grateful that, if need be, they can borrow it to warm up if the situation should arise.
Top it off by accessorizing with a simple vintage heritage watch, a tonally appropriate beaded bracelet, and some field note memo books to document any lingering thoughts, ideas or songs on your mind, or to jot down errands you may have to run. |

Fitting song name aside, (this guides style selections were thematically chosen solely for their comfort as well) what up-and-comer Lauv has managed to deliver here is a beautiful piano driven melody that is punctuated by a catchy chorus and lyricism that will surely be reflectively relevant and personal to the masses. Yet, I'd be lying if I didn't say that what really drew me in was the chorus, which is what ultimately defines this song — it is very Sam Smith-esque in its cadence (which reminds me, have you heard the new Spectre track? Writing's On The Wall…it encapsulates the very essence of what a 007 theme song should be…but I digress).
Ultimately though, Lauv succeeds where it matters: in delivering a catchy tune that is also deeply sentimental in nature. So I ask you, "are you walking on eggshells or are you just comfortable…" |
